Jesse and Frank James

The famous outlaw/bandits Jesse and Frank James had their roots in Adairville. Their father the Reverend Robert James grew up in Adairville and the brothers had many family members living in the area. They sought refuge in Adairville in the 1860s and carried out many bank robberies in near by towns both in Kentucky and Tennessee. For several years Jesse lived with the Hite family about two miles west of town. Two of his cousins who lived there joined his gang and went back to Missouri with him. He was later killed at his home. The old Hite house where he sought refuge and planned many robberies still stands two miles west of Adairville on Holman Road.
